Fighting along the Thailand-Cambodia border entered its third day on Saturday, with the death toll rising to 32 and over 80,000 people displaced. The violence was sparked by a land mine explosion on Wednesday that injured five Thai soldiers, triggering border closures and diplomatic expulsions.
The clashes have killed at least 19 in Thailand—mostly civilians—and 13 in Cambodia. Both countries blame each other for the hostilities, with Cambodia denying accusations of aggression and calling for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire.
The U.N. Security Council held an emergency closed-door meeting on Friday, urging both sides to deescalate and resolve the dispute peacefully. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), chaired by Malaysia, has offered to mediate.
Tensions between the two nations over the 800-kilometer border have flared sporadically for decades, with the latest conflict described as the worst since 2011. (AP News)
